Since 1992, when Ghana fully embraced democratic governance, presidential elections both in the US and Ghana have followed similar trends. The Democratic party in the US has similar ideology as the current ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) in Ghana. The Republican party on the other hand has similar colours as the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in Ghana, both use the elephant as their symbol.
Since 1992 whenever a Democratic presidential candidate wins an election, an NDC presidential candidate wins in Ghana. Furthermore, whenever a Republican presidential candidate wins, an NPP candidate wins in Ghana. None of these political parties have govern for more than two terms in a role (8 years).
A Republican presidential candidate has been elected as the president of the United States. If the trend between US and Ghana elections should repeat itself this year, then it means that NPP will win Ghana’s election on 7th December, 2016. Ghanaians living in Gothenburg – Sweden share their opinion on this historical election trends. The question is whether or not history will repeat itself in the up-coming Ghanaian election.
