Ghana Union Finland (GUF) has hosts its annual summer picnic in Helsinki. The event which attracted over 150 Ghanaians within the Helsinki region is intented to bring Ghanaians together in unity according to Ghana Union executives.
According to the Organising Secretary of the union, Patrick Osei, the union aims to a large extent unite all Ghanaians living in Finland and organising picnics is one of the ways the union uses to achieve its aims. Some of the activities of the picnic includes football, table tennis, atletics, among others.
This year’s picnic is a collaboration between Ghana Union and African Diaspora Finland (ADF), a non-Governmental Organisation based in Finland.
GUF Vice Organising Secretaery, Frank Nyarko says events like this is to allow frienship and fellowship within the Ghanaian community. According to Nyarko, the activities of GUF is not limited to organising summer picnics but it also focuses on the welfare of all Ghanaians living in Finland.
Looking into the future, Nyarko says Ghana Union will seek to expand their activities by incorporating symposia and family camping in their yearly programs. In addittion to these new programs, Nyarko says the union will reach out to other Finnish institutions to educate union members about the laws of Finland and other social related issues that are of concern to union members.
Osei mentions that one forum is already in the pipeline that will focus on the ways of improving the lifestyle of Ghanaians living in Finland. All Ghanaians living in Finland are automatic members of Ghana Union Finland, nonetheless members are encouraged to do a formal membership registration with the union. Osei says that the current executives are willing to tap into the advantages of some available software applications to make the activities of the union more attractive to entice new members. He expects the number of registered members to increase each year.
